Slovakia's vignette works the same basic way as most of its central European neighbors: an electronic pass tied to your licence plate, checked automatically rather than displayed as a sticker. It covers the country's motorways and expressways, which link the major cities and the main routes toward the Austrian, Czech, and Polish borders.
The vignette is sold in different validity lengths, and the price scales with how long you need coverage. A short trip through the country costs noticeably less than a month-long pass, and a full year costs more again — so it's worth matching the length to your actual plans rather than defaulting to the longest option out of caution. If you're only transiting through on your way somewhere else, the shortest option is usually enough.
The most common mistake isn't picking the wrong length, though — it's timing. The vignette has to be active before you get on the motorway, so buying it once you're already driving doesn't help. If you're crossing the border and heading straight onto a tolled road, buy it ahead of time rather than assuming you can sort it out at a service station once you're inside the country.
